History of Omaha Poker
Omaha is very similar to Texas Holdem and both share the common roots of poker. The general consensus is that poker originated from a 16th century Persian card game known as AS Nas. As Nas was played with 25 cards having 5 different suits. It was similar in play to the 5 card stud. Many of the current hand rankings used today were also a part of As Nas.
This game made its way to Europe where it was called the poque or pochen which perhaps led to the name of poker as we know it today. Whatever its origins, it transported to the United States where it became hugely popular and a game that is played across the world by millions of people.
Poker made its debut in the 1800s in New Orleans and spread quickly through to the West. With few laws and general spirit of risk taking and speculation, the Wild West was the perfect breeding ground for poker.
Despite its popularity poker was never considered as a socially acceptable game and the many efforts to stamp it out only served to make it even more attractive. Squarely entrenched into the American blood, it moved from the western frontiers to the riverboats of Mississippi and then to California during the Gold Rush.
After its nomadic movement, poker found its permanent and legal home in Las Vegas as the city grew to become the gambling Mecca of the world.
